B26 – Quarterly Reviews, Goals & Values

The end of Q1 2016 has arrived and now we are on our way to Q2.  Coming from auditing, quarterly reviews were our bread and butter alongside our main course of year-end filings.

Dano and I discuss this thick book that has become my quarterly review, and more importantly the purpose of it: pausing, reviewing life, and setting up goals for the next quarter with the knowledge that they create the foundation for a well lived life.

We review this quarter with the lessons and advice given to us from one of the most successful mentors in our lives, a man whose financial success is rivaled only by his humility and philanthropy.  As always, I’ve included the summary at the bottom of this post.

Watch as we discuss his advice which reveals some potentially neglected areas of personal development and hear about the insights we learned about ourselves through this quarter’s review.

If you don’t know what target to hit, you can’t hit it.  If you don’t know where you’re going, you can’t get there.  Life includes many areas of development, sometimes it takes a moment of reflection to realize an area may need some more attention than you’re giving it.  Sometimes it’s to be expected and reasonable that an area get less attention.  Other times, it may be that you didn’t realize the neglect and a review like this helps spark an awareness and desire within you for a needed change.

I hope you take something away from our discussion that resonates with you, and perhaps you even setup time intermittently to pause and review your accomplishments, areas of improvement, and future goals.  After all, a steady foundation is always a good thing.

Enjoy.

Values to Leave Children and Successive Generations

  1. Spiritual faith and belief.
  2. Commitment to family, marriage and children.
  3. Define for yourself strong values and live up to them. Most people innately understand what it means to be a ‘quality individual’ – be one.
  4. Be a role model for others, and especially for younger family members.
  5. Think of yourself as a leader and conduct yourself like one.
  6. Commit oneself to strong physical exercise and proper diet. Lead a healthy life – healthy habits, correct diet and exercise will lead to a longer life, but even more importantly — a much improved quality of the life you live.
  7. Develop the key goals that will define your life and commit to them. Define your self-image and live up to it by your everyday actions.
  8. Expect respect from others but realize you must earn it first.
  9. Live a normal life style without attracting too much noise and attention (too much ego destroys more careers than it creates). Realize the dangers of excessive ego – strive for success but remain humble.
  10. When you do achieve success, always recognize the value of giving the credit to others; and secondly, commit to giving back to society a meaningful amount of your time and financial resources
