It’s opening ceremony tonight for the Olympics. Whether you are an avid classical fan (watching it on TV) or a modern fan (watching clips as they emerge online), I hope you enjoy it. It seems as though in each passing Olympics, I start to understand more of the how the Olympics came to be on that screen I’m watching. From naive blissful ignorance as I watched rapturously what was being fed to me, to now starting to grok the economic and political backstories and ensuing global implications.
Often, the how is not pretty. From scandals in the IOC to individual Olympians doping. From crippling economies and security warnings, to promiscuity and viruses. But…for a moment, none of that matters as we come together to watch the opening ceremony, in person, live on TV in crystal clear high definition, on our phones, or via the 10’s of different mediums we can now participate with.
So for this Gratitude is Friday, I want to take you back to when “things were simpler” for me, and the resolution a little grainier. This is from the winter Olympics (and before my time), but it is still one of my favorites. It gets me going, tugs on my emotions, and leaves me cheering for the underdog, for the captain, the coach, and for the cheers and chants of USA, USA, USA.
It’s part of my affirmation song, and I love watching it every time. Whether you are part of team USA or not, I hope you enjoy the magic, the emotion, the spirit of this scene. Happy Friday.
